DESIGN TIPS FOR “BATHROOMS”

These are certain essentials while designing & setting up bathroom spaces which are a vital zone in our homes and work spaces.
A little attention to detail can make them comfortable and safe zones.

(1) DIVIDE THE SPACE IN MINIMUM SEGMENTS:

3’+3’+3′ space is ideal for washbasin+wc+bathing (resp). It is advisable if space permits then this minimum space of about 10-12 sft per facility is comfortable.

(2)PLACEMENT OF FIXTURES:

From functional comfort viewpoint its is essential that clear demarcation of frequently used and least used spaces is done in toilets. Since washbasins are most visited they must be easiest to access; bathing on the other hand is used hardly 1-2 times a day and can be farther away. In no case the toilet door should open up to a clear view of the WC or the toilet seat. Accidents do happen!

(3) SPACE FOR MIRROR:

It is most essential for proper mirror location in bathrooms. Mirror above sink is ideal and also if there is a possibility for full mirror that should also be accommodated.

(4) WET AND DRY ZONE DEMARCATION:

Proper demarcation of dry zones (washbasin & toilet seat) from wet zone (bathing area) needs to be done. It can be with shower curtain or glass partition also.

(5) SLOPE OF TOILET FLOOR

The slope or gradient of the floor should be proper so that water logging doesn’t happen. Seepage often happens on walls due to incorrect slope of these areas.

(6) PLANTS TO PURIFY AIR

Greenery is a great way to freshen up your mood and freshen up the air as well. Go for plants that can fit in your bathroom and improve the air quality & aesthetics. Some plants good for this purpose are:(i) Bamboo (ii) Spider plant (iii) Areca palm (iv) Aloe vera (v) Snake plant

(7) FLOATING VANITY

Having a floating vanity is great from cleanliness point of view. Also it looks quite classic and can be fitted with concealed light to enhance the ambiance

(8) TOWEL BAR & HOOKS ON DOOR

In case of a tight bathroom the ideal space for towel bar is on the door.

(9) HAVE A LEDGE IN SHOWER AREA

A ledge comes very handy for senior citizens, special needs as also for changing clothes or resting in the washroom. It maybe a regular one or you can go for a foldable ledge too.

(10) CORNER WASHBASIN

In case of space constraints a corner washbasin comes quite handy

(11)ANTI-SKID FLOORING-MUST HAVE

This is an absolute essential to avoid any accidents in the bathrooms especially the wet areas.
